Lesley McKenzie - UBC Thunderbird Coach
This is Lesley McKenzie’s second season as the UBC women’s rugby head coach.
Last year she led the T-Birds to a bronze medal finish at the Canada West Championships with a 37-0 victory over Victoria after the T-Birds narrowly missed upsetting the defending CIS National Champion Lethbridge Pronghorns in the CW semi-finals.
A former UBC rugby player, she began coaching with the junior varsity program in 2005, her final year of CIS eligibility. Since then McKenzie has continued to work with both the varsity and JV program and has been active at the high school level as well, running a number of specialist clinics and technical sessions for both boys and girls.
She first played rugby in her hometown of Fort Nelson, but it wasn’t until she came to UBC that McKenzie realized her affinity for the sport. After spending her first season with the junior varsity program, McKenzie graduated to the varsity team in her second year and earned a Canada West all-star nomination. A Marilyn Pomfret award finalist and former CIS All-Canadian, she played five seasons for the Thunderbirds.
In 2001 she was named to the BC Senior Women’s team and spent 2003 and 2004 with Canada’s U-23 squad before joining the Senior National Team in 2004. The Senior National Squad has been ranked fourth in the world since 2002 and finished fourth at the 2006 World Cup held in Edmonton. She has also been a member of BC Senior women’s team.
McKenzie spent part of 2008 in New Zealand playing with a premier women’s team and working with some of the top men’s coaches at training sessions to further bolster her coaching repertoire.
A dual graduate of UBC, she earned her BHKin in 2003 and her MA in Classical Near Eastern and Religious Studies in 2007.
